Backups, a PIN lock, and erase everything.
For you and the lawyer. Don’t mail it into a jail: mail inside is opened and read.
1 Back it up
A backup is one file with everything in it: the journal, the photos, the videos, and a list of their fingerprints. Keep it somewhere that isn’t this phone, like your own cloud account or a computer.
No backup made on this phone yet
2 Lock it with a PIN
A PIN keeps casual eyes out of the app on this phone. It does not encrypt anything, and it won’t stop someone who has the tools to search the phone.
No PIN
If you forget the PIN, the only way back in is to erase everything on this phone. A backup file can bring it all back afterward.
3 Room on this phone
Videos take a lot of room. If the phone runs out, it can stop recording or clear saved data.

4 Keep it on this phone
Added to your home screen, the app opens like any other app, full screen, with or without signal.
- Android, in Chrome: open the menu (three dots), then “Install app” or “Add to Home screen”.
- iPhone, in Safari: tap Share, then “Add to Home Screen”. Safari can clear a website’s saved data if it isn’t opened for a week or so, so add it to the home screen, and back it up.

5 Erase everything
This deletes the journal, the photos, the videos, the PIN and every setting from this phone. It can’t be undone. Make a backup first if you might need any of it.
6 Questions people ask
Can Surviving the Feds see my video or my notes?
No. There is no login and no server storage. Everything you put in the app stays in this phone’s browser storage. We never have it, so we couldn’t hand it to anyone if we were asked.
What happens if I clear my browser?
Everything in the app is erased with it. Make a backup file first, and keep the original video in your own cloud account.
Does the app need signal?
Only the first time it opens. After that, every screen works without signal. Making a backup, saving the packet and opening an email all work on the phone itself.
Can I use it on a computer?
Yes, in any up-to-date browser. Recording works best on the phone you will walk the house with.
Nothing you put in here leaves this phone unless you send it yourself.
