How far is it from you?
Driving directions (Google Maps) → Bus or train (Google Maps) →
Plan your drive around this: Visitors are not admitted to the visiting room after 2:00 p.m. (unless the Operations Lieutenant or Duty Officer approves). Visits end at 3:00 p.m. On weekends and federal holidays, processing stops at 9:30 a.m. for the official count. You can still be processed, but you wait until the count clears. Once you are in the visiting room, if you leave, the visit is over.
Our miles and time are an estimate from your ZIP code's center. Google Maps gives the exact route. Your ZIP code never leaves your phone unless you tap a Google Maps button.

No regular visiting Monday through Friday. Special visits on those days must be approved appointments through the Warden's Office. Click here to read the source: COC 5267.09E, Visiting Regulations, FCC Coleman (October 1, 2024) ↗
The BOP's own papers disagree. The Coleman I handbook (last updated November 2012) says visiting days are Mondays, Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and federal holidays, with Thursdays for the Special Housing Unit, and that weekend visits follow an even/odd system set by the fifth digit of the register number. The visiting rules (October 1, 2024) say Saturday, Sunday and federal holidays, with no regular visits Monday to Friday, and do not mention an even/odd system for this prison. Go by the newer rules and call the prison at (352) 689-6000 before you drive.
The rules at the door: ID, points, what you can bring
- How many visits
- Each person gets 6 points a month. Every visit costs 2 points, so that is 3 visits a month. Any part of a visit counts as a visit. Points do not carry over to the next month. Click here to read the source: COC 5267.09E, Visiting Regulations, FCC Coleman (October 1, 2024) ↗
- How many people
- Ordinarily up to 5 visitors at one time, not counting children under 2. Children 2 and under may sit on your lap if there is no seat. Children may never sit on the inmate's lap. Children must stay in direct line of sight of their parents. Click here to read the source: COC 5267.09E, Visiting Regulations, FCC Coleman (October 1, 2024) ↗
- ID
- Everyone 16 or older must show valid photo ID: a state driver's license, state ID, government ID or passport. Birth certificates are not accepted. Click here to read the source: COC 5267.09E, Visiting Regulations, FCC Coleman (October 1, 2024) ↗
- Screening
- You must clear the walk-through metal detector. If you do not clear it and the hand wand, you do not get in. All visitors can be pat-searched. An electronic drug detector is used; a positive test means no entry. At high security, every visitor must clear a metal detector and every bag is searched. Click here to read the source: COC 5267.09E, Visiting Regulations, FCC Coleman (October 1, 2024) ↗
- Forms you sign
- In the lobby you read and sign the Notification to Visitor form (BP-224(52)) and the visitor logbook. Click here to read the source: COC 5267.09E, Visiting Regulations, FCC Coleman (October 1, 2024) ↗

- What you can carry
- A clear change purse no bigger than 6 inches long, 6 inches wide and 3 inches deep. Jewelry you wear (not excessive, no watches), a sweater or light jacket, and a reasonable amount of feminine hygiene items. Everything else goes in your car or a lobby locker. Click here to read the source: COC 5267.09E, Visiting Regulations, FCC Coleman (October 1, 2024) ↗
- For a baby
- Empty clear plastic baby bottles, a reasonable amount of diapers, baby powder, ointment and wipes (in a clear container), up to 2 sealed containers each of baby food and formula, one set of baby clothes and one small blanket. - Not allowed in
- Phones, pagers and other electronics, sunglasses, over-the-counter medicine, cards, children's toys, gum, candy, open baby food, makeup, photos, letters, pens, pencils and watches. Life-saving medicine (heart, epilepsy) is allowed. Insulin and syringes are not counted as that, but can be kept in a lobby locker. Click here to read the source: COC 5267.09E, Visiting Regulations, FCC Coleman (October 1, 2024) ↗
- What to wear
- The 2012 handbook says: no shorts or culottes for anyone over 16, no see-through clothing, halter tops, tank tops or sleeveless tops of any kind, no tops that show the midriff, no radically low-cut or backless tops, no skin-tight or spandex clothing, and everyone must wear shoes and undergarments (including a bra for women). Click here to read the source: FCC Coleman USP-1 Admission and Orientation Handbook (last updated November 2012) ↗
- When it gets crowded
- Staff first ask for volunteers to leave. If no one volunteers, visitors who traveled less than 300 miles are "local" and are ended first, in the order they arrived. The room holds 192 people. Click here to read the source: COC 5267.09E, Visiting Regulations, FCC Coleman (October 1, 2024) ↗
- Giving things
- You may not hand anything to the inmate or take anything from them. Click here to read the source: COC 5267.09E, Visiting Regulations, FCC Coleman (October 1, 2024) ↗
How to get on the visiting list
- Your loved one asks their Correctional Counselor for the Visitor Information form. The 2024 rules give no form number.
- If the visitor is under 18, a parent or guardian must sign.
- The Unit Team checks the file and runs a criminal background check (NCIC). No one is added to the permanent list before the check clears. Anyone with a criminal record is decided by the Warden.
- The Unit Team tells them who was approved. They tell you. Do not drive until you are approved.
- Ordinarily the list holds no more than 20 people, with no more than 10 friends and associates. Friends must have known them before prison unless the Warden makes an exception.
- The list can be updated once a month.
- Transferred from another federal prison? The old approved list is not approved a second time, if the file shows the checks were done.
- New arrivals and holdovers with no list: only confirmed immediate family can visit, and you need proof such as a birth certificate.

Inmate mailing address
JOHN ANTHONY SMITH-JONES Reg. No. 12345-678 USP Coleman I P.O. Box 1033 Coleman, Fl 33521
Put their name, register number and unit on the envelope. The BOP facility listing gives the inmate mailing address as P.O. Box 1033, Coleman, FL 33521. The 2012 handbook shows P.O. Box 1033 with two different ZIP+4 codes (33521-0879 and 33521-1033) and P.O. Box 1027 on its cover. Use the address your loved one gives you. Click here to read the source: FCC Coleman USP-1 Admission and Orientation Handbook (last updated November 2012) ↗
Use the P.O. Box only. Never mail to the street address (846 Ne 54th Terrace, Sumterville, Fl 33521).
- Mail days
- Mail is collected Monday through Friday, not on holidays. Click here to read the source: FCC Coleman USP-1 Admission and Orientation Handbook (last updated November 2012) ↗
- Opened and checked
- Staff open and check all incoming mail for contraband. Click here to read the source: FCC Coleman USP-1 Admission and Orientation Handbook (last updated November 2012) ↗
- Their letters to you
- Outgoing general mail may not be sealed. It must have a return address with their name, register number and unit, or it is not processed and is sent back. The handbook says they print mailing labels through the TRULINCS computer system. Click here to read the source: FCC Coleman USP-1 Admission and Orientation Handbook (last updated November 2012) ↗
- Legal mail
- Opened in front of them if the front says "Special Mail - Open only in the presence of the inmate" (or similar) and the sender is clearly identified. - Books and magazines
- Hardcover books and newspapers only from the publisher, a book club or a bookstore. They may keep no more than 5 books, 3 magazines or 1 newspaper. Click here to read the source: FCC Coleman USP-1 Admission and Orientation Handbook (last updated November 2012) ↗

- Rejected mail
- Mail can be rejected for things like obscene or vulgar statements, threats, talk of criminal activity, signs of escape, codes, or nude photographs. Click here to read the source: FCC Coleman USP-1 Admission and Orientation Handbook (last updated November 2012) ↗
- Money
- Never put money in a letter. The mail room no longer accepts it and sends it back. It goes to the BOP lockbox in Des Moines, Iowa (see the Money tab). Click here to read the source: FCC Coleman USP-1 Admission and Orientation Handbook (last updated November 2012) ↗
Books and magazines: at a high security prison, books and magazines must come straight from a publisher, book club or bookstore (Amazon, for example), never from home.
How to send money to an inmate here
Money never goes to Coleman I. It goes to the BOP, and the BOP puts it on their account. There are 3 ways. Each one below shows you the actual form and exactly what to write in each box, already filled in with their name and number.
First, they must sign the power-of-attorney form (BP-A0407) when they arrive. Until they do, MoneyGram and Western Union money cannot post. Click here to read the source: Program Statement 4500.13, Trust Fund/Deposit Fund Manual (May 7, 2026) ↗
1. Postal money order Our pick
"Postal" means the U.S. Post Office. A postal money order is one you buy at the counter of a U.S. Post Office, from the United States Postal Service. Money orders sold at Walmart, a grocery store, a bank, Western Union, MoneyGram or a check-cashing store are not postal money orders.
Why it matters: a postal money order has no hold. Once the BOP's lockbox in Des Moines gets it, it goes on their account. Every other money order and every personal or company check is put on a 15-day hold first, and the 15 days only start when the lockbox receives the envelope. Add the days it spends in the mail, and it can be close to three weeks before they can spend it.Click here to read the source: BOP, Sending money by U.S. mail ↗ Click here to read the source: FCC Coleman USP-1 Admission and Orientation Handbook (last updated November 2012) ↗ Foreign money orders and checks are held 45 days. The postal money order is also the cheapest way.
The Post Office's own steps
- Decide the amount. Up to $1,000 in one money order.
- Go to any Post Office.
- Bring cash or a debit card. The Post Office does not take credit cards for money orders.

- Pay the amount plus the fee: $2.65 for up to $500, $3.75 for $500.01 to $1,000.
- Keep your receipt. You need it to track the money order or replace it if it is lost.Click here to read the source: U.S. Postal Service, Money Orders ↗

- Lost or stolen: take the receipt to any post office and ask for a Money Order Inquiry. It costs $23 and can take up to 60 days.
2. MoneyGram
Posts in about 2 to 4 hours if sent 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Eastern, any day. Up to $300 per payment. In a store, you fill out the blue ExpressPayment form. This is the BOP's own filled-in sample:

- Go to moneygram.com (Pay Bills) or the MoneyGram app and log in or sign up.
- Search the biller 7932 or "Federal Bureau of Prisons."
- Enter the amount (up to $300) and the account number

3. Western Union
Posts in about 2 to 4 hours. In a store, ask for the Quick Collect form ("To Send Money Form for Bill Payments"). Do not ask for a regular money transfer. This is a real Quick Collect form filled in with the BOP's values:
- Dollar Amountyour amount
- Pay toFederal Bureau of Prisons
- Code CityFBOP, DC
- AttentionJOHN ANTHONY SMITH-JONES
- Account # with Company (in the SENDER section: this is where people get lost)12345678SMITHJONES
Leave Promo Code blank. Put your own name, phone and address in the rest of the Sender section and sign at 3. Pay cash (some stores take debit). You get a 10-digit tracking number (MTCN). Keep it.
Unconfirmed: some stores have the blue Quick Collect form, some a "Pay a Bill" section, and some a phone to an agent.
Doing it online (Send2Corrections), screen by screen
You need a photo ID to set up the account: your name must match your ID exactly.
- Go to send2corrections.com or the Send2Corrections app. Log in or register.
- "Who are you sending to?" Choose the facility Federal Bureau of Prisons (FBOP DC).
- Receiver first name, middle name (optional), last name: exactly as the BOP has it.
- Commissary number: type only the 8 digits,
12345678. No dash, no name. The site adds the last name itself and shows the full account number in a grey box you cannot type in. - Ignore the pop-up that says "BOP number will not work." That text shows for every prison. The register number is what works.
- Amount: $1 to $300. Pay by card, or choose "Pay Cash (in-store)" and pay at a Western Union counter within 12 hours, or it cancels.
Hyphenated last name? The site drops the hyphen: Smith-Jones becomes 12345678SMITHJONES.
Money sent to the wrong person is not returned by Western Union. Western Union payments cannot be changed after they are sent.
Commissary list: what they can buy and what it costs
The Coleman I handbook (last updated November 2012) says the spending limit is $320 a month, and $25 a month for people who refuse the Financial Responsibility Program (FRP). National BOP policy (PS 4500.13, May 7, 2026) is $460 a month, plus $50 more in November and December. The handbook has not caught up. The commissary list says all items count toward the limit except stamps, copy cards and over-the-counter medicine. The handbook says each person's month starts over on a date worked out from the fifth digit of their register number (that digit times three, plus one). How shopping works at Coleman I
- The commissary schedule is posted at the commissary, and the handbook does not give opening hours. They must know their assigned shopping day. They shop by fingerprint; anyone whose fingerprints will not register uses their ID card.
- After the last call, the sales window stays open for fifteen minutes. Only people already in line are served.
- No changes or additions once the list is turned in. Sales are final once they accept the items, sign the receipt and leave the window.
- No single order may be more than $320 including shipping and mark-up. Special Purpose Orders (SPOs) are limited to $300 per quarter plus shipping and handling, and no more than one SPO is processed a month.

These are deaths the BOP announced in a press release that names this prison. The BOP does not publish a full count of deaths at each prison, so this is not a total. A news report (below) describes a shooting death here in October 2025 that does not appear in the BOP releases we found. Releases about other prisons in the complex are not listed here.
Sexual abuse audit (PREA)
The last federal sexual-abuse (PREA) audit covered the whole Coleman complex, not only this prison. It visited July 14 to 16, 2026. Result: 4 standards exceeded, 41 met, 0 not met. In the 12 months before the audit, the complex recorded 32 sexual-abuse allegations (25 against other inmates, 7 against staff) and 17 sexual-harassment allegations (9 against other inmates, 8 against staff). The report does not split these by prison. Click here to read the source: PREA audit report, FCC Coleman complex (onsite July 14 to 16, 2026) ↗
An allegation is a report, not a finding. The audit counts reports made, not what investigators concluded.
