Plan your drive around this: On weekends and holidays visitors may enter the visiting room until 9:15 a.m. There is a 10:00 a.m. count. If you arrive after 9:15 a.m., you wait until the count clears. The last time staff call someone out for a visit is 2:30 p.m., and visits end at 3:00 p.m.

The BOP's own papers disagree. The Yankton handbook is from March 2015. It also lists Friday evening visits, 4:30 p.m. to 9:15 p.m., and says each person visits every third weekend, set by the fifth digit of their register number. The newer visiting rules (June 9, 2025) do not list Friday evenings. They say people visit by a "rotation schedule" and are guaranteed at least four hours a month. They also say the Warden may limit some weekends to Saturday or Sunday, not both. Go by the newer rules, and call 605-665-3262 before you drive.
The rules at the door: ID, points, what you can bring
- How many visits
- The Warden must allow each person at least four hours of visiting a month. People visit on a rotation schedule. Ask the counselor which weekends are theirs. On some weekends visits may be limited to Saturday or to Sunday. Click here to read the source: YAN 5267.09L, Visiting Regulations, Institution Supplement (June 9, 2025) ↗

- Forms you sign
- At your first visit you fill out BP-A0224, Notification to Visitor. Blank forms are in the visitors' waiting area. For anyone under 18, a parent or guardian must sign the visitor information form, BP-A0629. Click here to read the source: YAN 5267.09L, Visiting Regulations, Institution Supplement (June 9, 2025) ↗

- What you can carry
- Only: ID, keys, vending machine money, feminine hygiene products, diapers and bottles for a baby, and asthma inhalers. Carry it all in one clear plastic bag; a clear plastic change purse about 5 inches by 8 inches. Heart medication and inhalers in their original containers may stay with you. Everything else goes in your locked car. No diaper bags or strollers. Click here to read the source: YAN 5267.09L, Visiting Regulations, Institution Supplement (June 9, 2025) ↗
- Not allowed in
- Cameras, recording equipment and other electronic devices, papers (unless the Unit Team approved them first), food, and anything to give to your loved one. - What not to wear
- Anyone over 12: no skirts, shorts or dresses above the top of the kneecap. No see-through clothing, halter tops, tube tops, sleeveless shirts, tank tops, tops that show the stomach, low-cut or backless tops, or skin-tight or spandex clothing. Shoes must cover the whole foot: no sandals, flip-flops or open-toed shoes. Underwear is required. Click here to read the source: YAN 5267.09L, Visiting Regulations, Institution Supplement (June 9, 2025) ↗
- Touching
- A handshake, hug and kiss at the start and at the end of the visit only. Hand holding, arms around each other, crossing legs together and lying on the furniture are not allowed. Click here to read the source: YAN 5267.09L, Visiting Regulations, Institution Supplement (June 9, 2025) ↗

- Outdoor visiting
- From mid-spring to mid-fall, depending on the weather. A group stays together, indoors or outdoors. It closes in bad weather and after dark. Click here to read the source: YAN 5267.09L, Visiting Regulations, Institution Supplement (June 9, 2025) ↗
- When it gets crowded
- The visiting room holds 178 people. Staff first ask for volunteers to leave. Then they look at how often you visited in the last 30 days, who has been in the room the longest that day, and how far you traveled. They give special consideration to people who traveled more than 400 miles. Click here to read the source: YAN 5267.09L, Visiting Regulations, Institution Supplement (June 9, 2025) ↗
- If the conviction involved a minor
- The rules say it is highly unlikely such a person would be housed at Yankton. If they are, they sit directly in front of the officer's desk and may not use the children's area or the outdoor area. How to get on the visiting list
- At intake your loved one gets the handbook and a form to request their first visiting list. Visitors fill out the visiting questionnaire in full, with phone number and Social Security number. (Handbook, 2015.)
- The Unit Team approves the list. Staff may run a background check (NCIC) if they have a reason. A criminal conviction does not by itself stop a visit, but the Warden may have to approve it.
- The list holds immediate family plus 10 additional adults (16 or older) who knew your loved one before prison. Exceptions need the Warden's approval, in writing.
- Staff tell your loved one who was approved or denied. They tell you. Do not drive until you are approved. People who arrive and are not on the list are turned away, however far they traveled.
- A visitor may be on only one person's list. The only exception is family members who are both at Yankton.
- They can ask to add or remove names every six months.
- Transferred from another prison? The handbook says the old list follows, but you must be approved again by the counselor.

How to send money to an inmate here
Money never goes to Yankton. It goes to the BOP, and the BOP puts it on their account. There are 3 ways. Each one below shows you the actual form and exactly what to write in each box, already filled in with their name and number.
First, they must sign the power-of-attorney form (BP-A0407) when they arrive. Until they do, MoneyGram and Western Union money cannot post. Click here to read the source: Program Statement 4500.13, Trust Fund/Deposit Fund Manual (May 7, 2026) ↗
1. Postal money order Our pick
"Postal" means the U.S. Post Office. A postal money order is one you buy at the counter of a U.S. Post Office, from the United States Postal Service. Money orders sold at Walmart, a grocery store, a bank, Western Union, MoneyGram or a check-cashing store are not postal money orders.
Why it matters: a postal money order has no hold. Once the BOP's lockbox in Des Moines gets it, it goes on their account. Every other money order and every personal or company check is put on a 15-day hold first, and the 15 days only start when the lockbox receives the envelope. Add the days it spends in the mail, and it can be close to three weeks before they can spend it.Click here to read the source: BOP, Sending money by U.S. mail ↗ Click here to read the source: FPC Yankton Admission and Orientation Handbook (March 2015) ↗ Foreign money orders and checks are held 45 days. The postal money order is also the cheapest way.
The Post Office's own steps
- Decide the amount. Up to $1,000 in one money order.
- Go to any Post Office.

Doing it online (Send2Corrections), screen by screen
You need a photo ID to set up the account: your name must match your ID exactly.
- Go to send2corrections.com or the Send2Corrections app. Log in or register.
- "Who are you sending to?" Choose the facility Federal Bureau of Prisons (FBOP DC).
- Receiver first name, middle name (optional), last name: exactly as the BOP has it.
- Commissary number: type only the 8 digits,
12345678. No dash, no name. The site adds the last name itself and shows the full account number in a grey box you cannot type in. - Ignore the pop-up that says "BOP number will not work." That text shows for every prison. The register number is what works.
- Amount: $1 to $300. Pay by card, or choose "Pay Cash (in-store)" and pay at a Western Union counter within 12 hours, or it cancels.
Hyphenated last name? The site drops the hyphen: Smith-Jones becomes 12345678SMITHJONES.
Money sent to the wrong person is not returned by Western Union. Western Union payments cannot be changed after they are sent.
Commissary list: what they can buy and what it costs
Yankton's handbook (March 2015) says the monthly spending limit is $320.00. National BOP policy (PS 4500.13, May 7, 2026) raised the monthly limit from $360 to $460, plus $50 more in November and December. The handbook has not caught up. Stamps, copy cards, phone credits and over-the-counter medicine do not count against the limit. If they refuse to pay court fines on the payment plan ("FRP refuse"), their limit is $25.00 a month.
