Level 3: outpatients with complex, usually chronic, medical or mental health conditions who need frequent clinical contacts and may sometimes need a hospital stay. The BOP's own papers disagree. The Fort Worth handbook is old (revised August 2018). It says weekend visits run on an odd and even rotation set by the fifth digit of the inmate's register number, changing on April 15 and October 15. The newer visiting rules (May 17, 2024) do not mention a rotation. The handbook also says visitors arriving after 2:00 p.m. are not let in, while the rules say inmate processing stops at 9:30 a.m. Call the prison at 817-534-8400 before you drive (the BOP facility feed number; the scanned visiting rules print 817-534-5400, which may be a misprint) and ask which day your loved one can have visitors.
The rules at the door: ID, points, what you can bring
- How many visits
- Each inmate gets 9 points on the 1st of each month. A weekday visit (Monday) costs 1 point. A weekend or holiday visit costs 2 points. Points do not carry over. The Minister of Record does not count against the total. Click here to read the source: FTW 5267.09 (C), Visiting Regulations (May 17, 2024) ↗
- How many people
- No more than 3 visitors at a time in the main room, adults and children together, and at least one must be an adult. A child under 3 must be held by an adult the whole visit. The Jail Unit and the Lubbock Unit allow only 2 adult visitors. To bring more, ask the Unit Manager for a Special Visit (once every 90 days, usually for someone who lives far away). Click here to read the source: FTW 5267.09 (C), Visiting Regulations (May 17, 2024) ↗
- ID
- Everyone 16 or older needs valid photo ID: driver's license, state ID, military ID, passport or other government photo ID. The Mexican Matricula Consular card is not accepted. Everyone fills out form BP-A224 (Notification to Visitor). Birth certificates do not count as ID. Click here to read the source: FTW 5267.09 (C), Visiting Regulations (May 17, 2024) ↗
- Screening
- Everyone must clear the metal detector (or hand wand) and the X-ray for bags. After the third failed try, staff ask you to leave. The handbook also says everyone must pass the ion scanner: fail twice and you are not let in; fail the retest 48 hours later and you cannot visit for 30 days. Feminine hygiene products are allowed. Click here to read the source: FTW 5267.09 (C), Visiting Regulations (May 17, 2024) ↗

No tight or spandex clothes, and shorts only to the top of the knee. Shoes need a back or a strap: no flip-flops, open-toe shoes or slippers. No gray sweat clothes or plain brown or white t-shirts (the commissary sells them). No khaki or tan, orange or red jumpsuits. No hooded tops, hats, gloves, sunglasses or watches. How to get on the visiting list
- Your loved one mails you the visiting form, BP-A629 (Visitor Information). It also works as your permission for the BOP to check your background.
- Fill it out and mail it back to their correctional counselor by official U.S. mail only. Faxes and forms handed over by hand are not accepted.
- The counselor tells your loved one within one week who was approved or denied. They tell you. Do not drive until you are approved.
- The list holds up to 20 approved adults plus one Minister of Record. Friends must have known them before prison unless the Warden makes an exception. Anyone with a criminal record needs the Warden's approval.
- Children under 16 do not need to be on the list but must come with their parent or legal guardian. Visitors aged 16 or 17 without a parent need written permission from a parent or legal guardian.
- They can ask their counselor to change the list at any time.
- SHU visits: ask at least 2 business days ahead through the FMC Fort Worth public email address on bop.gov. The Executive Assistant emails back to approve or deny.

How to send money to an inmate here
Money never goes to Fort Worth. It goes to the BOP, and the BOP puts it on their account. There are 3 ways. Each one below shows you the actual form and exactly what to write in each box, already filled in with their name and number.
First, they must sign the power-of-attorney form (BP-A0407) when they arrive. Until they do, MoneyGram and Western Union money cannot post. Click here to read the source: Program Statement 4500.13, Trust Fund/Deposit Fund Manual (May 7, 2026) ↗
1. Postal money order Our pick
"Postal" means the U.S. Post Office. A postal money order is one you buy at the counter of a U.S. Post Office, from the United States Postal Service. Money orders sold at Walmart, a grocery store, a bank, Western Union, MoneyGram or a check-cashing store are not postal money orders.
Why it matters: a postal money order has no hold. Once the BOP's lockbox in Des Moines gets it, it goes on their account. Every other money order and every personal or company check is put on a 15-day hold first, and the 15 days only start when the lockbox receives the envelope. Add the days it spends in the mail, and it can be close to three weeks before they can spend it.Click here to read the source: BOP, Sending money by U.S. mail ↗ Click here to read the source: FMC Fort Worth Admission and Orientation Handbook (revised August 2018) ↗ Foreign money orders and checks are held 45 days. The postal money order is also the cheapest way.

12345678. No dash, no name. The site adds the last name itself and shows the full account number in a grey box you cannot type in. - Ignore the pop-up that says "BOP number will not work." That text shows for every prison. The register number is what works.
- Amount: $1 to $300. Pay by card, or choose "Pay Cash (in-store)" and pay at a Western Union counter within 12 hours, or it cancels.
Hyphenated last name? The site drops the hyphen: Smith-Jones becomes 12345678SMITHJONES.
Money sent to the wrong person is not returned by Western Union. Western Union payments cannot be changed after they are sent.
Commissary: what they can spend
Fort Worth's handbook (revised August 2018) says the spending limit is $360.00 per month. Stamps, copy cards and over-the-counter medicine do not count toward it. National BOP policy (PS 4500.13, May 7, 2026) raised the monthly limit from $360 to $460, plus $50 more in November and December. Fort Worth's handbook may not reflect the new limit. If they are in refuse status on the court-fine payment plan, the limit is $25.00. How shopping works at Fort Worth
- The commissary is open Monday through Thursday, 6:00 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
- The fourth and fifth digits of their register number set their shopping day. The order rotates each quarter. The schedule is on the TRULINCS bulletin board.
- Staff check their fingerprint or ID card before a sale.
- If they do not come to the window after their number is called three times, they lose that week's shopping.
- All sales are final once they leave the sales area. Shoes cannot be returned or exchanged. They must bring their laundry bag.
The price list: Fort Worth's official list is a scan or an older layout we could not turn into a reliable searchable list, so we don't retype prices we can't be sure of. Click here to read the source: FMC Fort Worth Commissary Shopping List (2025) ↗
