The BOP's own papers disagree. Sandstone's two papers disagree. The visiting rules (May 19, 2025) say visits are Saturday, Sunday and federal holidays. The handbook (December 2021) also lists Monday, and says visitors are not processed before 8:30 a.m. or after 2:30 p.m. (the rules let visitors start processing at 8:00 a.m.). The 2025 rules are newer, but call the prison at 320-245-2262 before you drive, especially for a Monday visit.
The rules at the door: ID, points, what you can bring
- Odd and even weekends
- On Saturdays and Sundays, visiting runs on an odd/even weekend system set by the fifth digit of their register number (0 counts as even). Odd numbers visit on the odd weekends of the month, even numbers on the even weekends. There is no odd/even rule on weekdays or federal holidays. A schedule is posted in the units, and they must tell you which weekends are theirs. Click here to read the source: SST-5267.09D, Visiting Regulations (May 19, 2025) ↗
- How many visits
- No more than 6 visits a month. Federal holidays do not count toward the six. Up to 6 visitors at one time unless approved ahead. The visiting room holds 100 people. When it is crowded, visits can be cut to 2 hours, with the number of visits, number of visitors and distance traveled in mind. Click here to read the source: SST-5267.09D, Visiting Regulations (May 19, 2025) ↗
- Who can be on the list
- Up to 20 adult visitors (age 16 and older). Friends must have known them before prison unless the Warden approves an exception. A visitor cannot be on two inmates' lists unless the relationship can be verified (for example two family members both at Sandstone). New arrivals and holdovers with no approved list: immediate family only, with a birth certificate or other proof; approval normally takes about five working days. Click here to read the source: SST-5267.09D, Visiting Regulations (May 19, 2025) ↗
- Changing the list
- They can change the list once a month. Click here to read the source: SST-5267.09D, Visiting Regulations (May 19, 2025) ↗
- ID
- Valid state or government photo ID for everyone 16 and older. Your ID is held at the front lobby during the visit. Children under 16 must come with a parent or guardian. You also fill out a Notification to Visitor form (BP-A0224) before the visit. Click here to read the source: SST-5267.09D, Visiting Regulations (May 19, 2025) ↗
- What you can carry
- No purses, wallets, briefcases or bags. One clear plastic change purse (about 5 by 8 inches) with no more than $40.00, in bills no larger than $20.00. No playing cards, toys, newspapers, magazines, gum, food, tobacco, ChapStick or watches. Leave cell phones, car keys and handbags in your locked car or a locker. No photos on the grounds. - For a baby
- A reasonable amount of diapers, wipes, a small blanket and bottles or food, carried in hand or in a clear plastic bag no bigger than one gallon. No diaper bags or strollers. A designated area is set aside for nursing mothers. Click here to read the source: SST-5267.09D, Visiting Regulations (May 19, 2025) ↗

Click here to read the source: SST-5267.09D, Visiting Regulations (May 19, 2025) ↗
- Touching
- An embrace and a kiss when you arrive and when you leave. Nothing else. Crossing legs together, holding hands, arms around each other, lying on the furniture, fondling and kissing at other times can end the visit. Click here to read the source: SST-5267.09D, Visiting Regulations (May 19, 2025) ↗
- What they wear
- Clean, pressed khaki clothes, a belt, shirt buttoned and tucked in, and boots. Zip tags are put on their boots, and a removed or missing tag ends the visit. They may bring one handkerchief, one wedding ring, one comb and prescription glasses. They are pat searched going in and strip searched coming out. - Photos
- An approved inmate photographer takes photos on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Photo tickets are bought in the commissary. Click here to read the source: SST-5267.09D, Visiting Regulations (May 19, 2025) ↗
How to get on the visiting list
- Their counselor gives them a proposed visitor list. They add their family and attorney.
- Everyone else gets a Visitor Information form (BP-A0629) mailed to them by your loved one.
- The form and a National Crime Information Center (NCIC) check must be done before approval. The Unit Manager approves each visitor.
- The counselor tells them who was approved or turned down. They must tell you and give you a copy of the visiting rules. Do not drive until you know you are on the list.
- If a background check turns up a problem, the Warden decides. The inmate is told the visitor will not be added, but is not told why.

How to send money to an inmate here
Money never goes to Sandstone. It goes to the BOP, and the BOP puts it on their account. There are 3 ways. Each one below shows you the actual form and exactly what to write in each box, already filled in with their name and number.
First, they must sign the power-of-attorney form (BP-A0407) when they arrive. Until they do, MoneyGram and Western Union money cannot post. Click here to read the source: Program Statement 4500.13, Trust Fund/Deposit Fund Manual (May 7, 2026) ↗
1. Postal money order Our pick
"Postal" means the U.S. Post Office. A postal money order is one you buy at the counter of a U.S. Post Office, from the United States Postal Service. Money orders sold at Walmart, a grocery store, a bank, Western Union, MoneyGram or a check-cashing store are not postal money orders.
Why it matters: a postal money order has no hold. Once the BOP's lockbox in Des Moines gets it, it goes on their account. Every other money order and every personal or company check is put on a 15-day hold first, and the 15 days only start when the lockbox receives the envelope. Add the days it spends in the mail, and it can be close to three weeks before they can spend it.Click here to read the source: BOP, Sending money by U.S. mail ↗ Click here to read the source: FCI Sandstone Admission and Orientation Handbook (updated December 2021) ↗ Foreign money orders and checks are held 45 days. The postal money order is also the cheapest way.
The Post Office's own steps
- Decide the amount. Up to $1,000 in one money order.
- Go to any Post Office.
- Bring cash or a debit card. The Post Office does not take credit cards for money orders.

Doing it online (Send2Corrections), screen by screen
You need a photo ID to set up the account: your name must match your ID exactly.
- Go to send2corrections.com or the Send2Corrections app. Log in or register.
- "Who are you sending to?" Choose the facility Federal Bureau of Prisons (FBOP DC).
- Receiver first name, middle name (optional), last name: exactly as the BOP has it.
- Commissary number: type only the 8 digits,
12345678. No dash, no name. The site adds the last name itself and shows the full account number in a grey box you cannot type in. - Ignore the pop-up that says "BOP number will not work." That text shows for every prison. The register number is what works.
- Amount: $1 to $300. Pay by card, or choose "Pay Cash (in-store)" and pay at a Western Union counter within 12 hours, or it cancels.
Hyphenated last name? The site drops the hyphen: Smith-Jones becomes 12345678SMITHJONES.
Money sent to the wrong person is not returned by Western Union. Western Union payments cannot be changed after they are sent.
Commissary: what they can spend
Sandstone's handbook (December 2021) says the national spending limit is $360.00 and that each account is revalidated every two weeks at Sandstone. National BOP policy (PS 4500.13, May 7, 2026) raised the limit to $460 a month, plus $50 more in November and December. The handbook has not caught up. If they refuse to pay court fines under the payment plan ("refuse" status), their limit is only $25.00.
