The BOP's own papers disagree. Otisville's papers disagree, and the older ones are very old. The visiting rules (October 1, 2021, the newest) give the main prison Saturday, Sunday, Monday and federal holidays. The handbook (August 2012) gives Friday, Saturday, Sunday and federal holidays, and says 4 adults and 4 children may visit at once (the 2021 rules say 3 and 3). The camp insert (file from February 2013) gives the camp Monday, Thursday and Friday 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. plus weekends and holidays 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Call 845-386-6700 before you drive.
The rules at the door: ID, points, what you can bring
- How many visits
- Each person gets 12 visiting points a month. A weekday visit costs 1 point. A weekend or holiday visit costs 2 points. Unused points do not carry over. Click here to read the source: OTV 5267.09a, Visiting Regulations (October 1, 2021) ↗
- Odd and even weekends (camp)
- At the camp, the 5th digit of the register number decides which weekends they get visits. Example from the rules: register number 87654-321 has a 5th digit of 4, so that is an even weekend. Weekends then alternate. To visit on the other weekend you need written approval from the Camp Administrator. Click here to read the source: OTV 5267.09a, Visiting Regulations (October 1, 2021) ↗
- How many people
- Up to 3 adults and 3 children at one time. The main visiting room holds no more than 64 people and the camp room no more than 61. When it is crowded, everyone still gets at least one hour. Click here to read the source: OTV 5267.09a, Visiting Regulations (October 1, 2021) ↗
- Who can visit
- Immediate family, other relatives and 25 additional friends and associates. Friends they did not know before prison need the warden's approval, and ordinarily only if they have no other visitors on their list. Click here to read the source: OTV 5267.09a, Visiting Regulations (October 1, 2021) ↗
- ID
- Everyone 16 or older needs valid photo ID issued by the federal government or a state: driver's license, state ID or passport. Foreign passports are accepted; foreign ID cards are not. Click here to read the source: OTV 5267.09a, Visiting Regulations (October 1, 2021) ↗

- Screening
- Everyone must walk through the metal detector without setting it off. A medical condition needs a doctor's note approved by the warden before you come. You get a hand stamp that is checked when you leave. Your photo is taken the first time you visit. Click here to read the source: OTV 5267.09a, Visiting Regulations (October 1, 2021) ↗

How to get on the visiting list
- Your loved one gets Form BP-629.052 (Visitor Information and Authorization for Release) from their unit team and mails it to you.
- Fill it out and mail it directly to their unit counselor.
- The unit team processes the list, runs a background check and tells your loved one who was approved. They tell you. Do not drive until you are approved.
- The list can be changed once each quarter.
- Giving false information about a visitor gets that person taken off the list.

How to send money to an inmate here
Money never goes to Otisville. It goes to the BOP, and the BOP puts it on their account. There are 3 ways. Each one below shows you the actual form and exactly what to write in each box, already filled in with their name and number.
First, they must sign the power-of-attorney form (BP-A0407) when they arrive. Until they do, MoneyGram and Western Union money cannot post. Click here to read the source: Program Statement 4500.13, Trust Fund/Deposit Fund Manual (May 7, 2026) ↗
1. Postal money order Our pick
"Postal" means the U.S. Post Office. A postal money order is one you buy at the counter of a U.S. Post Office, from the United States Postal Service. Money orders sold at Walmart, a grocery store, a bank, Western Union, MoneyGram or a check-cashing store are not postal money orders.
Why it matters: a postal money order has no hold. Once the BOP's lockbox in Des Moines gets it, it goes on their account. Every other money order and every personal or company check is put on a 15-day hold first, and the 15 days only start when the lockbox receives the envelope. Add the days it spends in the mail, and it can be close to three weeks before they can spend it.Click here to read the source: BOP, Sending money by U.S. mail ↗ Click here to read the source: FCI Otisville Admission and Orientation Handbook (revised August 2012) ↗ Foreign money orders and checks are held 45 days. The postal money order is also the cheapest way.

- Decide the amount. Up to $1,000 in one money order.
- Go to any Post Office.

You need a photo ID to set up the account: your name must match your ID exactly.
- Go to send2corrections.com or the Send2Corrections app. Log in or register.
- "Who are you sending to?" Choose the facility Federal Bureau of Prisons (FBOP DC).
- Receiver first name, middle name (optional), last name: exactly as the BOP has it.
- Commissary number: type only the 8 digits,
12345678. No dash, no name. The site adds the last name itself and shows the full account number in a grey box you cannot type in. - Ignore the pop-up that says "BOP number will not work." That text shows for every prison. The register number is what works.
- Amount: $1 to $300. Pay by card, or choose "Pay Cash (in-store)" and pay at a Western Union counter within 12 hours, or it cancels.
Hyphenated last name? The site drops the hyphen: Smith-Jones becomes 12345678SMITHJONES.
Money sent to the wrong person is not returned by Western Union. Western Union payments cannot be changed after they are sent.
Commissary: what they can spend
The 2012 handbook says the spending limit is $320.00 per month, with postage stamps and phone credits exempt. National BOP policy (PS 4500.13, May 7, 2026) now sets $460 a month, plus $50 more in November and December. Otisville's handbook is far out of date.
