Lewisburg at a glance
FCI Lewisburg is a medium-security federal prison for men in central Pennsylvania, with a large minimum-security prison camp. The camp also holds the residential drug program (RDAP). Lewisburg used to be a penitentiary, and several BOP papers (including the visiting rules and the handbook) still call it "USP Lewisburg." Visiting days are the same for the main prison and the camp, but the monthly visit limits are different.
- How many people
- 595 in the FCI and 492 at the camp (BOP, October 29, 2026).
- Medical care level 2
- Stable outpatients who need to see a clinician anywhere from monthly to every 6 months. Examples the BOP gives: diabetes controlled with medication, epilepsy, emphysema. - Mental health care level 2
- Routine outpatient mental health care, or short crisis care such as suicide watch. The BOP does not post care levels on its website. This list is dated February 13, 2024 and came out through a public records request. The BOP's own papers disagree. The camp papers disagree. The visiting rules (May 20, 2025) give camp and RDAP inmates 8 points a month, with 1 point per weekend or holiday visit, and let them have up to 5 friends or other non-relatives on the list. The camp handbook (revised April 2020) says 2 points per weekend or holiday visit, 6 points a month (3 visits), and up to 10 friends and non-relatives. Go by the newer rules, and call 570-523-1251 before you drive. Also, the papers still call the main prison "USP Lewisburg" while the BOP's own page calls it FCI Lewisburg.
The rules at the door: ID, points, what you can bring
- How many visits

- Immediate family go on the list right away. Friends and other non-relatives: up to 4 at the main prison and up to 5 at the camp. Click here to read the source: LEW 5267.09H, Visiting Regulations (May 20, 2025) ↗
- Criminal record
- A conviction alone is not a barrier. Staff weigh the nature and how recent it was. The Captain and the Associate Warden (Programs) can approve a visitor with a record, one case at a time. Former inmates of Lewisburg need the Warden's approval. Click here to read the source: LEW 5267.09H, Visiting Regulations (May 20, 2025) ↗
- Age
- Anyone 16 or older must complete the visitor form and be on the list first. A parent or guardian must sign for a minor. Children under 16 may visit only with a legal guardian or an immediate family member over 18. Click here to read the source: LEW 5267.09H, Visiting Regulations (May 20, 2025) ↗

How to get on the visiting list
- Your loved one gives their counselor the names. The counselor mails each of you the Visitor Information form. The visiting rules name it BP-A0629 (and also print the number BP-5629.052).
- You fill it out and return it. A parent or guardian signs for anyone under 18. Nothing happens until it is back.
- The unit team runs the background check and checks that you are on the list. They tell your loved one yes or no. They tell you. Do not drive until you are approved.
- The list holds immediate family plus up to 4 friends or other non-relatives at the main prison (5 at the camp).
- Coming from another prison: the old approved list can be carried over; the rules say the unit team works from the list from their last prison.
Driving directions (from the BOP)
- The address

- Bus, air, taxi
- There is no bus service between Lewisburg and the prison. The nearest commercial airport is in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, where AVIS has a car rental desk in the main terminal. Hotels (from the visitor handout): Holiday Inn Express 570-568-1100 and Comfort Inn 570-568-8000. Greyhound and Trailways run to the area; a local taxi is available; several community groups run charter buses from large cities.

How to send money to an inmate here
Money never goes to Lewisburg. It goes to the BOP, and the BOP puts it on their account. There are 3 ways. Each one below shows you the actual form and exactly what to write in each box, already filled in with their name and number.
First, they must sign the power-of-attorney form (BP-A0407) when they arrive. Until they do, MoneyGram and Western Union money cannot post. Click here to read the source: Program Statement 4500.13, Trust Fund/Deposit Fund Manual (May 7, 2026) ↗
1. Postal money order Our pick
"Postal" means the U.S. Post Office. A postal money order is one you buy at the counter of a U.S. Post Office, from the United States Postal Service. Money orders sold at Walmart, a grocery store, a bank, Western Union, MoneyGram or a check-cashing store are not postal money orders.
Why it matters: a postal money order has no hold. Once the BOP's lockbox in Des Moines gets it, it goes on their account. Every other money order and every personal or company check is put on a 15-day hold first, and the 15 days only start when the lockbox receives the envelope. Add the days it spends in the mail, and it can be close to three weeks before they can spend it.Click here to read the source: BOP, Sending money by U.S. mail ↗ Click here to read the source: USP Lewisburg General Population Admission and Orientation Handbook (May 2020) ↗ Foreign money orders and checks are held 45 days. The postal money order is also the cheapest way.
The Post Office's own steps
- Decide the amount. Up to $1,000 in one money order.
- Go to any Post Office.
- Bring cash or a debit card. The Post Office does not take credit cards for money orders.
- Fill it out at the counter with the clerk. Use the boxes below.
- Pay the amount plus the fee: $2.65 for up to $500, $3.75 for $500.01 to $1,000.
- Keep your receipt. You need it to track the money order or replace it if it is lost.Click here to read the source: U.S. Postal Service, Money Orders ↗

Lost it? Tracking and replacing a money order
- Keep the receipt. You need the serial number, post office number and amount to track it at tools.usps.com/money-orders.htm.
- Lost or stolen: take the receipt to any post office and ask for a Money Order Inquiry. It costs $23 and can take up to 60 days.
2. MoneyGram
Posts in about 2 to 4 hours if sent 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Eastern, any day. Up to $300 per payment. In a store, you fill out the blue ExpressPayment form. This is the BOP's own filled-in sample:

- Go to moneygram.com (Pay Bills) or the MoneyGram app and log in or sign up.
- Search the biller 7932 or "Federal Bureau of Prisons."

3. Western Union

Unconfirmed: some stores have the blue Quick Collect form, some a "Pay a Bill" section, and some a phone to an agent.
Doing it online (Send2Corrections), screen by screen
You need a photo ID to set up the account: your name must match your ID exactly.
- Go to send2corrections.com or the Send2Corrections app. Log in or register.
- "Who are you sending to?" Choose the facility Federal Bureau of Prisons (FBOP DC).
- Receiver first name, middle name (optional), last name: exactly as the BOP has it.
- Commissary number: type only the 8 digits,
12345678. No dash, no name. The site adds the last name itself and shows the full account number in a grey box you cannot type in. - Ignore the pop-up that says "BOP number will not work." That text shows for every prison. The register number is what works.
- Amount: $1 to $300. Pay by card, or choose "Pay Cash (in-store)" and pay at a Western Union counter within 12 hours, or it cancels.
Hyphenated last name? The site drops the hyphen: Smith-Jones becomes 12345678SMITHJONES.
Money sent to the wrong person is not returned by Western Union. Western Union payments cannot be changed after they are sent.
Commissary list: what they can buy and what it costs
The commissary list (July 2022) says "The validation limit is $360.00" and the 2020 handbook says the same. National BOP policy (PS 4500.13, May 7, 2026) is now $460 a month, plus $50 more in November and December. Lewisburg's papers have not caught up. If they refuse to pay a court-ordered fine under the payment plan ("refuse" status), the handbook says their limit is only $25.00 a month. How shopping works at Lewisburg
- A filled-out, signed commissary list and their ID card must be presented at the window.
- It is their job to check the commissary bulletin board for out-of-stock items, price changes, new items, ice cream flavors and pastry.
- No extras or substitutions at the window. All sales are final. Prices can change without notice.
- If they are not there when their name is called, the order is restocked and they lose that week's shopping. Only one inmate in the booth at a time.
- The camp handbook (April 2020) says the camp's limit is $320.00 a month. Stamps are exempt from the limit. The commissary is closed for inventory the last week of March, June, September and December.
(K) kosher, (H) halal. A number like "max 3" is the most they can buy at once. From the official list approved Updated July 2022 (approved "On File", Warden Stephen Spaulding). Prices change without notice. Click here to read the source: USP/LEC Lewisburg Commissary List (updated July 2022) ↗

Programs
- RDAP (drug program; can mean up to a year off for those eligible)
- The BOP's RDAP list names the camp (SCP Lewisburg). The 2020 main-prison handbook says RDAP "is not available here," so someone at the main prison who qualifies would be moved to a prison that has it. Treatment is at least 9 months. How to ask: send an Inmate Request to Staff Member (cop-out). A non-violent person may get up to 1 year off for completing it. The visiting rules also give RDAP visits in the camp visiting room.
