Jesup at a glance
Jesup is really three places on one site in southeast Georgia: the FCI (medium security), a Federal Satellite Low (FSL), and a minimum-security prison camp. All three are for men. The visiting days are different for each one, so find out which one your loved one is in.
- How many people
- 1,039 in the FCI and 133 at the camp (BOP, October 29, 2026).
- Medical care level 2
- Stable outpatients who need to see a clinician anywhere from monthly to every 6 months. Examples the BOP gives: diabetes controlled with medication, epilepsy, emphysema. Click here to read the source: BOP "Institution Care Levels for Medical Assignment," February 13, 2024 (released under FOIA 2024-03455) ↗
- Mental health care level 2
- Routine outpatient mental health care, or short crisis care such as suicide watch. The BOP does not post care levels on its website. This list is dated February 13, 2024 and came out through a public records request. How far is it from you?

Plan your drive around this: The rules give no last-entry time. Camp visitors may not be on the property before 7:30 a.m., and may not get out of their car before 7:45 a.m., or they lose that day's visit. When the room is full, visits can be cut down to a minimum of one hour. In bad weather no one is admitted until the lieutenant says normal operations have resumed.

The BOP's own papers disagree. Jesup's two papers disagree. The visiting rules (May 15, 2025) put FCI visits on Sunday and Monday, and FSL and camp visits on Friday and Saturday. The handbook (revised February 2016) says visiting is Saturday, Sunday, Monday and all federal holidays, 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., for everyone. The handbook is older. Also, the rules say 16- and 17-year-olds must be on the list and come with an adult; the handbook says they can come alone with written permission from a parent. Go by the 2025 rules and call 912-427-0870 before you drive.
The rules at the door: ID, points, what you can bring
- How many visits
- They get 8 visiting points a month. A weekend or holiday visit costs 2 points. Points are charged by visiting day, not by visit. Unused points do not carry over. People on holdover get 4 visiting days a month. Legal visits are free. Click here to read the source: JES 5267.09, Visiting Regulations (May 15, 2025) ↗
- How many people
- No more than 4 adults at one time. The Unit Manager can approve more in special cases, such as a long trip. A visitor who is on two lists may visit two people at once. Click here to read the source: JES 5267.09, Visiting Regulations (May 15, 2025) ↗
- Who can be on the list
- They must have known you before prison, unless the Warden makes an exception. Children under 16 do not need to be on the list but must come with an approved adult. Children 16 and 17 must be on the list and come with an adult. Everyone 16 or older who is not immediate family gets a criminal background check (NCIC). A visitor with a felony needs the Warden's approval. Click here to read the source: JES 5267.09, Visiting Regulations (May 15, 2025) ↗
- ID
- The rules say a state-issued REAL ID or a government-issued passport. The visitors handout in the same document says two forms of ID, one of them a photo ID. Bring both kinds if you can. Click here to read the source: JES 5267.09, Visiting Regulations (May 15, 2025) ↗
- Screening
- At the FCI and FSL everyone passes through the metal detector and is stamped on the hand with invisible ink, which staff check under a black light when you leave. A medical implant needs a letter from a licensed medical doctor saying what it is and where. Camp visitors may be screened with a hand-held scanner. Click here to read the source: JES 5267.09, Visiting Regulations (May 15, 2025) ↗
- Money for vending machines
- Up to $25.00, with no bill larger than $5.00. You cannot leave money for their account. Click here to read the source: JES 5267.09, Visiting Regulations (May 15, 2025) ↗
- What you can carry
- A clear change purse or clear plastic bag no bigger than 6 by 6 by 3 inches; one car key; a comb or brush; jewelry you wear in; a sweater or light jacket; baby items (2 clear empty bottles, up to 6 sealed formula packs, up to 4 sealed baby food containers, 6 diapers, ointment, 1 small blanket, 1 set of clothes); life-maintenance medicine only. Lockers are in the front lobby. Click here to read the source: JES 5267.09, Visiting Regulations (May 15, 2025) ↗

- What they wear
- At the FCI and FSL: khaki shirt, pants, belt, socks, underwear and institution orange shoes. At the camp: institution shirt, pants and belt, with personal shoes. At the FCI and FSL they are strip searched before and after. At the camp they are pat searched. Click here to read the source: JES 5267.09, Visiting Regulations (May 15, 2025) ↗
- Children
- You must keep control of your children. One warning, then the visit can be ended. Click here to read the source: JES 5267.09, Visiting Regulations (May 15, 2025) ↗
- Sex offense involving a minor
- People convicted of a sex offense involving a minor are noted in the visiting system. People with a history of bringing in contraband or breaking visiting rules are given assigned seats. Click here to read the source: JES 5267.09, Visiting Regulations (May 15, 2025) ↗
How to get on the visiting list
- In their first days, the unit counselor gives your loved one an Inmate 30-Day Visitation Form. Immediate family listed in their pre-sentence report (mother, father, stepparent, guardian, sister, brother, children, spouse) can visit for 30 days from their orientation while the paperwork is done.
- The counselor gives them an Authorization for Release (Visitor) and a Visitor Information Form for each person. The rules print the form number as BP-309. (The BOP's national form is BP-A0629; this is not confirmed in Jesup's papers.) They send them to you.
- Fill them out, sign them and return them directly to the unit counselor. They must arrive within the 30 days, or the temporary approval is suspended.
- The counselor runs the background check. They are told yes or no, and they tell you. Do not drive until you are approved.
- The rules let them change the list at any time. They do not set a maximum list size.
- Holdover (passing through): a list is made within 5 working days, immediate family only.

Inmate mailing address
JOHN ANTHONY SMITH-JONES Reg. No. 12345-678 FCI Jesup 2680 301 South Jesup, Ga 31599
The handbook gives the mailing address as their committed name, register number and housing unit, then the institution. Ask your loved one for their unit. The 2016 handbook says outgoing mail must carry a mailing label, and most outgoing mail at the FCI is left unsealed so staff can screen it. Click here to read the source: FCI/FSL/FPC Jesup Admission and Orientation Handbook (revised February 2016) ↗
Use exactly this address. Jesup has no P.O. Box for inmate mail.
- Books and magazines
- Hardcover books and newspapers may come only from the publisher, a book club or a bookstore. At a medium security prison, soft-cover books and magazines must also come only from the publisher, a book club or a bookstore. At the camp, soft-cover items other than newspapers may come from any source. Put the sender's address on the outside of the package. Click here to read the source: FCI/FSL/FPC Jesup Admission and Orientation Handbook (revised February 2016) ↗

Books and magazines: at a medium security prison, books and magazines must come straight from a publisher, book club or bookstore (Amazon, for example), never from home.
How to send money to an inmate here
Money never goes to Jesup. It goes to the BOP, and the BOP puts it on their account. There are 3 ways. Each one below shows you the actual form and exactly what to write in each box, already filled in with their name and number.
First, they must sign the power-of-attorney form (BP-A0407) when they arrive. Until they do, MoneyGram and Western Union money cannot post. Click here to read the source: Program Statement 4500.13, Trust Fund/Deposit Fund Manual (May 7, 2026) ↗
1. Postal money order Our pick
"Postal" means the U.S. Post Office. A postal money order is one you buy at the counter of a U.S. Post Office, from the United States Postal Service. Money orders sold at Walmart, a grocery store, a bank, Western Union, MoneyGram or a check-cashing store are not postal money orders.
Why it matters: a postal money order has no hold. Once the BOP's lockbox in Des Moines gets it, it goes on their account. Every other money order and every personal or company check is put on a 15-day hold first, and the 15 days only start when the lockbox receives the envelope. Add the days it spends in the mail, and it can be close to three weeks before they can spend it.Click here to read the source: BOP, Sending money by U.S. mail ↗ Click here to read the source: FCI/FSL/FPC Jesup Admission and Orientation Handbook (revised February 2016) ↗ Foreign money orders and checks are held 45 days. The postal money order is also the cheapest way.

- Receiver first name, middle name (optional), last name: exactly as the BOP has it.
- Commissary number: type only the 8 digits,
12345678. No dash, no name. The site adds the last name itself and shows the full account number in a grey box you cannot type in. - Ignore the pop-up that says "BOP number will not work." That text shows for every prison. The register number is what works.
- Amount: $1 to $300. Pay by card, or choose "Pay Cash (in-store)" and pay at a Western Union counter within 12 hours, or it cancels.
Hyphenated last name? The site drops the hyphen: Smith-Jones becomes 12345678SMITHJONES.
Money sent to the wrong person is not returned by Western Union. Western Union payments cannot be changed after they are sent.
Commissary: what they can spend
Jesup's handbook (February 2016) says the spending limit is $160.00 every two weeks, reset on the 1st and 15th of the month. Stamps and medicine are not counted. National BOP policy (PS 4500.13, May 7, 2026) is now $460 a month, plus $50 more in November and December. Jesup's handbook is ten years old and has not caught up. How shopping works at Jesup
- They shop only on their authorized day, one time a week.
- They bring a finished list, their ID card and their commissary bag. Once the list is in they stay until their name is called. If they miss their name, they wait until their next sales day.
- No add-ons after the list is in. All sales are final. No refunds or exchanges.
- Some items are limited: 1 container of ice cream, 1 book of stamps, 3 copy cards. A copy card costs $6.50.
- Out-of-stock items are not back ordered. The order is cancelled and the money returned.
The price list: Jesup's official list is a scan or an older layout we could not turn into a reliable searchable list, so we don't retype prices we can't be sure of. Click here to read the source: FCI Jesup Commissary List (dated July 3, 2013) ↗
