Fort Dix is really three prisons on one military base: the East and West compounds (low security) and a satellite camp (minimum security). Coming in, the East Compound is on your right, the West on your left, and the camp straight ahead on the right.

How to send money to an inmate here
Use their committed name exactly as the BOP Inmate Locator shows it.The name and number below are examples (JOHN ANTHONY SMITH-JONES, 12345-678).
Money never goes to Fort Dix. It goes to the BOP, and the BOP puts it on their account. There are 3 ways. Each one below shows you the actual form and exactly what to write in each box, already filled in with their name and number.
"Postal" means the U.S. Post Office. A postal money order is one you buy at the counter of a U.S. Post Office, from the United States Postal Service. Money orders sold at Walmart, a grocery store, a bank, Western Union, MoneyGram or a check-cashing store are not postal money orders.
Unconfirmed: the BOP does not say in writing what goes on the "Pay to" line. Their name is what families use. The name and number on the envelope are what the BOP requires.

"Who are you sending to?" Choose the facility Federal Bureau of Prisons (FBOP DC).
Receiver first name, middle name (optional), last name: exactly as the BOP has it.
Commissary number: type only the 8 digits, 12345678. No dash, no name. The site adds the last name itself and shows the full account number in a grey box you cannot type in.
Ignore the pop-up that says "BOP number will not work." That text shows for every prison. The register number is what works.

Hyphenated last name? The site drops the hyphen: Smith-Jones becomes 12345678SMITHJONES.

These are deaths the BOP announced in a press release. The BOP does not publish a full count of deaths at each prison, so this is not a total.

Sexual abuse audit (PREA)
The last federal sexual-abuse (PREA) audit visited Fort Dix January 30 to February 1, 2024. Result: 6 standards exceeded, 35 met, 0 not met. In the 12 months before the audit, Fort Dix recorded 11 sexual-abuse allegations (8 against staff, 3 against other inmates) and 18 sexual-harassment allegations (5 against staff). Safety: sex offenders and cooperators (5K1)
Is Fort Dix safe for sex offenders or people who cooperated?
A lot of people arrive scared that Fort Dix is unsafe for anyone with a sex offense or a 5K1 (a cooperation motion from the prosecutor) in their file. A current inmate on the East compound, there since June 2016, says that is not what they see.
"It's not a rule. It's just how the place is. A lot of guys show up here and think it's unsafe for sex offenders or guys with 5K1 in their jacket. That isn't true. As long as you hold yourself upright and remember your place, it will be fine. There's violence at Fort Dix, but it almost always has to do with debts, or getting your cell hit by the cops because you were out of pocket. If you think you are gonna run the TV or sit wherever you wanna sit at the chow hall, then you aren't gonna be happy. But I watch sex offenders use the weight pit and the gym equipment, sit in the TV rooms, eat in the chow hall, and go everywhere every day, and nobody really bothers them."
A current inmate, Fort Dix East compound, there since June 2016. Saw it firsthand. Reported November 2026.
In plain words
Violence at Fort Dix is mostly about debts, or about getting your cell searched ("hit") by officers because you were out of line ("out of pocket").
People with sex offenses use the gym, TV rooms and chow hall every day without being bothered.
What causes trouble: acting like you run the TV or can sit anywhere in the chow hall.
Bras and metal
Underwired bras are not allowed at FCI Fort Dix, period, even though the posted rules don't mention them. A current inmate watched an 80-year-old woman get suspended from visiting for six months over one. Wear a sports bra or a bra with no wire.
Books
No more than 5 items per package, soft cover only, BOP APPROVED X BOOKS on the front.
