Plan your drive around this: Visitors are not processed after 2:00 p.m. on weekends, or after 8:00 p.m. on Friday evenings. Do not arrive before 8:00 a.m. (or 5:00 p.m. on Friday): you will not be processed before then.

Visiting hours and days
| Who | Days | Hours |
|---|---|---|
| FCI and FSL, weekends | Saturday and Sunday, on odd/even weekends. They visit one weekend if the 5th digit of their register number is odd, and the next weekend if it is even (zero counts as even). Federal holidays too. | 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. |
| FCI and FSL, Friday evening | Fridays. Open to all inmates. This is in the 2018 rules only; the 2022 handbook does not list it. | 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. |
| Special Housing Unit (SHU) | Same days as everyone. SHU visits end 30 minutes before regular visiting ends. Expect a delay. | Ends 30 minutes early |
Visitors are not processed after 2:00 p.m. on weekends, or after 8:00 p.m. on Friday evenings. Do not arrive before 8:00 a.m. (or 5:00 p.m. on Friday): you will not be processed before then.

The BOP's own papers disagree. Both Elkton papers are old, and they differ. The visiting rules (August 30, 2018) add Friday evening visits, 5:00 to 9:00 p.m., and say you may bring a clear container. The handbook (June 1, 2022) lists only Saturday, Sunday and federal holidays, 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., says visitors are denied entry after 2:00 p.m., and says visitors cannot bring money in: they buy a debit card from a machine in the front lobby for the vending machines. Call 330-420-6200 before you drive and ask about Friday evenings, which weekend is theirs, and the debit card.
The rules at the door: ID, points, what you can bring
- How many visits
- There is no point system. Weekend visits depend on the odd/even rule above, plus Friday evenings (2018 rules) and federal holidays. Click here to read the source: FCI Elkton Inmate Information Handbook (updated June 1, 2022) ↗
- How many people
- No more than 6 visitors in the visiting room at one time, children included. If more than 6 come, staff arrange a split visit: some leave the grounds (not in the parking lot) and others come in. Only one swap is allowed, and no one who left can come back that day. Click here to read the source: ELK 5267.09, Visiting Regulations (August 30, 2018) ↗
- ID
- Everyone 16 or older needs valid photo ID: a driver's license, state ID, INS card, military ID or passport. Foreign driver's licenses count. Not valid: credit or store cards, school ID, birth certificates, Social Security cards or bank cards. Children under 16 need a responsible adult. Click here to read the source: ELK 5267.09, Visiting Regulations (August 30, 2018) ↗
- Screening
- Visitors are searched before they enter, with a walk-through or hand-held metal detector. Anyone who cannot pass the walk-through because of surgical pins or plates gets a hand-held detector and a visual check. Refuse a search and you are not let in. The prison does not store your things; leave them in your car. Click here to read the source: ELK 5267.09, Visiting Regulations (August 30, 2018) ↗
- Money
- The handbook (2022) says no money goes into the visiting room. Visitors buy a debit card from a machine in the front lobby to use in the vending machines. The 2018 rules say you may carry a clear plastic container the size of a wallet or small change purse. You cannot leave money for their account. Click here to read the source: FCI Elkton Inmate Information Handbook (updated June 1, 2022) ↗
- For a baby
- Three clear nursing bottles, four diapers, wet wipes and one small blanket. No baby powder, ointments, creams, bowls or cups. The diaper bag must be clear plastic and only for visitors with small infants. Mothers who breastfeed may do so. Click here to read the source: ELK 5267.09, Visiting Regulations (August 30, 2018) ↗
- Not allowed in
- Cell phones and pagers, food, chewing gum, medicine (nitroglycerin may be allowed if the Health Services Administrator authorizes it), watches, sunglasses (except prescription), luggage, packages, tape players and recorders. Tobacco. Pets, except service animals with certification. Click here to read the source: ELK 5267.09, Visiting Regulations (August 30, 2018) ↗
- When it gets crowded
- Visits can be ended for overcrowding. Local visitors (within 75 miles) are ended first, to make room for out-of-town visitors. Click here to read the source: ELK 5267.09, Visiting Regulations (August 30, 2018) ↗
How to get on the visiting list
- Your loved one's unit team gives them the Visiting Guidelines (Attachment A) and a temporary list for immediate family. They mail the guidelines to everyone on it.
- Anyone who is not immediate family gets the Visitor Information Form (BP-A0629). You fill it out completely, sign it and mail it directly to their counselor.
- The unit team runs an NCIC (criminal record) check before anyone who is not immediate family is added.
- The counselor tells them in writing who was approved. They tell you. Do not drive until you are approved.
- The list holds 20 visitors in all, children included. Everyone must have known your loved one before prison, unless the Warden makes an exception.
- A visitor can be denied if information is missing, if a person with a criminal record cannot get written approval from their probation or parole officer, or if a relationship before prison cannot be shown.
- The list can be changed once a quarter, with an Inmate Request to Staff form. Holdovers and new arrivals with no list: immediate family only.

How to send money to an inmate here
Money never goes to Elkton. It goes to the BOP, and the BOP puts it on their account. There are 3 ways. Each one below shows you the actual form and exactly what to write in each box, already filled in with their name and number.
First, they must sign the power-of-attorney form (BP-A0407) when they arrive. Until they do, MoneyGram and Western Union money cannot post. Click here to read the source: Program Statement 4500.13, Trust Fund/Deposit Fund Manual (May 7, 2026) ↗
1. Postal money order Our pick
"Postal" means the U.S. Post Office. A postal money order is one you buy at the counter of a U.S. Post Office, from the United States Postal Service. Money orders sold at Walmart, a grocery store, a bank, Western Union, MoneyGram or a check-cashing store are not postal money orders.
Why it matters: a postal money order has no hold. Once the BOP's lockbox in Des Moines gets it, it goes on their account. Every other money order and every personal or company check is put on a 15-day hold first, and the 15 days only start when the lockbox receives the envelope. Add the days it spends in the mail, and it can be close to three weeks before they can spend it.Click here to read the source: BOP, Sending money by U.S. mail ↗ Click here to read the source: FCI Elkton Inmate Information Handbook (updated June 1, 2022) ↗ Foreign money orders and checks are held 45 days. The postal money order is also the cheapest way.
The Post Office's own steps
- Decide the amount. Up to $1,000 in one money order.

Unconfirmed: some stores have the blue Quick Collect form, some a "Pay a Bill" section, and some a phone to an agent.
Doing it online (Send2Corrections), screen by screen
You need a photo ID to set up the account: your name must match your ID exactly.
- Go to send2corrections.com or the Send2Corrections app. Log in or register.
- "Who are you sending to?" Choose the facility Federal Bureau of Prisons (FBOP DC).
- Receiver first name, middle name (optional), last name: exactly as the BOP has it.
- Commissary number: type only the 8 digits,
12345678. No dash, no name. The site adds the last name itself and shows the full account number in a grey box you cannot type in. - Ignore the pop-up that says "BOP number will not work." That text shows for every prison. The register number is what works.
- Amount: $1 to $300. Pay by card, or choose "Pay Cash (in-store)" and pay at a Western Union counter within 12 hours, or it cancels.
Hyphenated last name? The site drops the hyphen: Smith-Jones becomes 12345678SMITHJONES.
Money sent to the wrong person is not returned by Western Union. Western Union payments cannot be changed after they are sent.
Commissary: what they can spend
Elkton's handbook (June 1, 2022) says $300.00 a month. National BOP policy (PS 4500.13, May 7, 2026) raised the monthly limit from $360 to $460, plus $50 more in November and December. Per the handbook, stamps, phone credits, over-the-counter medicine, religious items and approved education items do not count against the limit. We did not copy the price list: the only list on the BOP site is a scan from June 2020 that is too old and too garbled to trust. Phone calls and email

- Every call is cut off after 15 minutes, with a one hour wait between calls. The handbook does not give a monthly minute limit. Click here to read the source: FCI Elkton Inmate Information Handbook (updated June 1, 2022) ↗
- Contacts
