The BOP's own papers disagree. Bennettsville's visiting rules are from July 1, 2013, and the handbook has no date. They mostly agree, but on small things they do not: the rules allow 4 diapers per child and the handbook says 5. The rules also say visits are ended by how long a visitor has been in the room, while an attachment adds weather, how often you visit and how far you traveled. These papers are about 13 years old. Call 843-454-8200 before you drive.
The rules at the door: ID, points, what you can bring
- How many people

- Screening
- Everyone must pass the walk-through metal detector. Visitors can also be pat searched. If a medical condition keeps you from clearing it, send a signed doctor's note at least 2 weeks before the visit. Refusing a search means no visit. - Money for vending machines
- Bring no more than $25.00, which is put on a Debitek card for the vending machines. No cash is allowed past the front lobby. Your loved one cannot go near the vending machines. Click here to read the source: BEN 5267.08G, Visiting Regulations (July 1, 2013) ↗

- When it gets crowded
- The FCI visiting room holds 171 people. When it is full, visits are ended starting with the visitors who have been in the room longest. Click here to read the source: BEN 5267.08G, Visiting Regulations (July 1, 2013) ↗

How to get on the visiting list
- Your loved one gives you the Visitor Information Sheet and the visiting rules. The rules give no form number for it.
- You fill out the sheet and sign the release authorization form, then you return both to their Unit Counselor. Nothing happens until the counselor has them.
- The counselor runs an NCIC criminal background check. Immediate family listed in the pre-sentence report are added after that check. Friends need to have known them before prison, unless the Warden makes an exception.
- The counselor tells them who was approved or denied. They tell you. Do not drive until you are approved.
- The list normally holds up to 20 people. To change it, they send an Inmate Request to Staff Member form to the Unit Team.
- New arrivals get no social visits in the first 72 hours. After that, until the list is checked, only immediate family may visit. Transferred from another federal prison? The approved list is kept unless something changes.
- Someone not on the list needs a special visit, requested by your loved one at least 72 hours ahead. These are held to a minimum.

How to send money to an inmate here
Money never goes to Bennettsville. It goes to the BOP, and the BOP puts it on their account. There are 3 ways. Each one below shows you the actual form and exactly what to write in each box, already filled in with their name and number.
First, they must sign the power-of-attorney form (BP-A0407) when they arrive. Until they do, MoneyGram and Western Union money cannot post. Click here to read the source: Program Statement 4500.13, Trust Fund/Deposit Fund Manual (May 7, 2026) ↗
1. Postal money order Our pick
"Postal" means the U.S. Post Office. A postal money order is one you buy at the counter of a U.S. Post Office, from the United States Postal Service. Money orders sold at Walmart, a grocery store, a bank, Western Union, MoneyGram or a check-cashing store are not postal money orders.
Why it matters: a postal money order has no hold. Once the BOP's lockbox in Des Moines gets it, it goes on their account. Every other money order and every personal or company check is put on a 15-day hold first, and the 15 days only start when the lockbox receives the envelope. Add the days it spends in the mail, and it can be close to three weeks before they can spend it.Click here to read the source: BOP, Sending money by U.S. mail ↗ Click here to read the source: FCI Bennettsville Admission and Orientation Handbook (undated; file created September 2013) ↗ Foreign money orders and checks are held 45 days. The postal money order is also the cheapest way.

- "Who are you sending to?" Choose the facility Federal Bureau of Prisons (FBOP DC).
- Receiver first name, middle name (optional), last name: exactly as the BOP has it.
- Commissary number: type only the 8 digits,
12345678. No dash, no name. The site adds the last name itself and shows the full account number in a grey box you cannot type in. - Ignore the pop-up that says "BOP number will not work." That text shows for every prison. The register number is what works.
- Amount: $1 to $300. Pay by card, or choose "Pay Cash (in-store)" and pay at a Western Union counter within 12 hours, or it cancels.
Hyphenated last name? The site drops the hyphen: Smith-Jones becomes 12345678SMITHJONES.
Money sent to the wrong person is not returned by Western Union. Western Union payments cannot be changed after they are sent.
Commissary: what they can spend
Bennettsville's handbook (undated; file from 2013) says they can spend up to $80 per week, with stamps and phone time not counted. National BOP policy (PS 4500.13, May 7, 2026) now sets $460 a month, plus $50 more in November and December. Bennettsville's handbook has not caught up, so ask the prison how it applies the national limit.
