The BOP's own papers disagree. The visiting rules (March 15, 2024) say every visit costs 2 points, Friday included, out of 12 points a month. The handbook (revised January 1, 2022) says a Friday visit costs 1 point and a weekend visit 2. The two papers also give different distances from Williamsport (13 miles in the rules, 11 in the handbook). Go by the newer rules and call 570-547-1990 before you drive.
The rules at the door: ID, points, what you can bring
- How many visits
- They get 12 points a month. Every visit costs 2 points, so that is 6 visits a month. No points are used on federal holidays or for legal, minister and Prisoner Visitation and Support (PVS) visits. More points need written approval from an Associate Warden. Click here to read the source: ALX-5267.09C, Visiting Regulations for FCC Allenwood (March 15, 2024) ↗
- How many people
- No more than 5 people at a time, children included, unless approved in writing ahead of time. Extra visitors are turned away. They sit across from adult visitors, in seats the officer assigns. Click here to read the source: ALX-5267.09C, Visiting Regulations for FCC Allenwood (March 15, 2024) ↗
- Who can be on the list
- Up to 25 immediate family members plus up to 10 friends, associates and other relatives. Everyone must have known them before prison, unless the Warden makes an exception. Click here to read the source: ALX-5267.09C, Visiting Regulations for FCC Allenwood (March 15, 2024) ↗
- ID
- Everyone 16 or older needs valid photo ID (driver's license, state ID, passport and similar). Check cashing cards do not count. Anything that says "Federal Limits" or "not valid for federal purposes" is not accepted. Children under 16 with a parent or guardian do not need ID. Click here to read the source: ALX-5267.09C, Visiting Regulations for FCC Allenwood (March 15, 2024) ↗

How to get on the visiting list
- They ask their correctional counselor for the visiting forms and mail them to you. (The Allenwood papers give no form number; the BOP national visitor form is BP-A0629. Not confirmed in the Allenwood papers.)
- You return the forms directly to the counselor. If a background check is needed, you also sign and return a release authorization.
- Everyone gets a background check (NCIC), including immediate family. A drug or violent felony in the past 3 years will ordinarily be recommended for denial.
- Anyone on probation, parole or supervised release needs a letter from the supervising agency, and the Warden decides.
- The counselor gives them a copy of the approved list. They tell you. Do not drive until you are approved.
- The list can be changed at any time under these procedures.

How to send money to an inmate here
Money never goes to Allenwood Low. It goes to the BOP, and the BOP puts it on their account. There are 3 ways. Each one below shows you the actual form and exactly what to write in each box, already filled in with their name and number.
First, they must sign the power-of-attorney form (BP-A0407) when they arrive. Until they do, MoneyGram and Western Union money cannot post. Click here to read the source: Program Statement 4500.13, Trust Fund/Deposit Fund Manual (May 7, 2026) ↗
1. Postal money order Our pick
"Postal" means the U.S. Post Office. A postal money order is one you buy at the counter of a U.S. Post Office, from the United States Postal Service. Money orders sold at Walmart, a grocery store, a bank, Western Union, MoneyGram or a check-cashing store are not postal money orders.
Why it matters: a postal money order has no hold. Once the BOP's lockbox in Des Moines gets it, it goes on their account. Every other money order and every personal or company check is put on a 15-day hold first, and the 15 days only start when the lockbox receives the envelope. Add the days it spends in the mail, and it can be close to three weeks before they can spend it.Click here to read the source: BOP, Sending money by U.S. mail ↗ Click here to read the source: LSCI Allenwood Admission and Orientation Handbook (revised January 1, 2022) ↗ Foreign money orders and checks are held 45 days. The postal money order is also the cheapest way.

- Receiver first name, middle name (optional), last name: exactly as the BOP has it.
- Commissary number: type only the 8 digits,
12345678. No dash, no name. The site adds the last name itself and shows the full account number in a grey box you cannot type in. - Ignore the pop-up that says "BOP number will not work." That text shows for every prison. The register number is what works.
- Amount: $1 to $300. Pay by card, or choose "Pay Cash (in-store)" and pay at a Western Union counter within 12 hours, or it cancels.
Hyphenated last name? The site drops the hyphen: Smith-Jones becomes 12345678SMITHJONES.
Money sent to the wrong person is not returned by Western Union. Western Union payments cannot be changed after they are sent.
Commissary list: what they can buy and what it costs
Allenwood Low's handbook (January 1, 2022) says they may spend $360 a month, with a $180 limit every two weeks. National BOP policy (PS 4500.13, May 7, 2026) raised the limit from $360 to $460 a month, plus $50 more in November and December. Allenwood's handbook is out of date. Stamps, over-the-counter medicine and copy cards do not count toward the limit. The March 2025 commissary list is headed "$90.00 Weekly Spending Limit". In the 12 months before the audit, the whole complex (all three prisons together) recorded 5 sexual-abuse allegations (all against other inmates) and 4 sexual-harassment allegations (all against other inmates). The audit does not split these by prison. Click here to read the source: PREA audit report, FCC Allenwood (onsite July 29 to 31, 2025) ↗
